Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Depauw, Indiana. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair tests and has centers for testing across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary for testing. Hair analysis can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other testing options.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Many businesses, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts mandate a hair test instead of the typical urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, the legal system, and those on probation utilize hair follicle tests. The main advantage is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, ensuring secure collection and minimizing chances of cheating. Yet, for recent drug usage detection, within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The advantages of hair lie in its ability to capture biomarkers within its fibers, offering an extended timeline of substance usage. When taken near the scalp, it provides an estimated detection span of up to three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair sampling is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equating to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy in specimen measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. In discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair entails all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in lab analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial intake of a sample into the laboratory's framework. This step confirms the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment of potential substance abuse. While it offers a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, any positive result from Screening must be further validated to qualify for court use. Therefore, any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should Screening results indicate a presumptive positive finding, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at concentrations much lesser than those found in other testing processes (e.g., urine or oral fluid), affirming hair drug screening as the most complex method to execute.

Positive screening confirmations employ GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples designated as presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation if required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests detect drug usage for a period of up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a narrower detection timeframe.
  • High resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair test is considerably difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Tracks usage history: It charts a timeline of drug usage beyond recent consumption alone.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair tests incur higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand and not the follicle residing under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
