Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fairland, Indiana. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our focus is on hair testing, with testing centers available in all cities Nationwide to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offers other specialized testing options.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a standard procedure for drug testing. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This method is ideal for employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as for court-ordered and probation-related testing. Key advantages include a much longer window of detection, typically up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process, making it nearly foolproof. However, for detecting drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-standing record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair offers an approximately 3-month detection period for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch section containing around 200 hair strands (roughly equal in size to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp contains 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If head hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair is an option. References to head hair mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in laboratory processing of drug testing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of inputting a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial swift assessment for drugs. While Screening is a cost-efficient way to rule out the on majority of samples, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation for court acceptability. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. This phase involves removing drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than alternate techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to Confirmation when needed. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a limited detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, enhancing result reliability.
  • Delivers historical insights: Displays a drug use pattern over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent intake: Drugs become hair-detectable after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair itself, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Fairland, IN, hair follicle testing is proving superior to urine testing by offering unparalleled detection precision and reliability. Stronger than urine tests, hair tests have a much broader scope, detecting drug use long after the substances have left the system, thus providing a clearer picture of an individual’s drug history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
