Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fremont, Indiana. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise in hair testing ensures reliable results with numerous testing centers across the nation that can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are needed. These tests are versatile, able to screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become a favored method for screening drug use. Numerous employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse professionals now opt for this instead of the standard urine test. Hair follicle tests are invaluable for companies enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, legal systems, and individuals on probation. This method's standout advantage is its extended drug detection duration, covering up to 90 days. The process is supervised and virtually foolproof. However, for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day span, urine tests still lead in precision.

What it is, How it works

Seen as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage, hair testing has gained recognition. The fibers of a growing hair strand enclose biomarkers, offering a lengthy history of alcohol and other drugs. By collecting hair near the scalp, it can reveal up to a 3-month detection window for substances. Hair is straightforward to obtain, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferable amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional testing, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers only to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for handling a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a specimen in a laboratory setting. This involves confirming the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any manual data entry that isn't provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid examination for drugs of abuse. While screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be validated for legal admissibility. Samples that screen presumptively positive require follow-up confirmation.

If presumptive positivity is detected during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly smaller concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging technique.

Confirming any positive screenings is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples that preliminarily screen positive undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: Falsifying a hair drug test proves challenging, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Displays usage history: Hair testing provides a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
