Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Geneva, Indiana. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we're experts in hair evaluations and have centers nationwide ready to conduct these tests. A typical requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas. Hair testing can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific testing needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug testing practices. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly opt for hair tests over the standard urine test. Hair follicle tests serve those with strict anti-drug policies, court mandates, and probation requirements. Their main advantage is the extended detection timeframe, up to 90 days, observed during collection, and difficult to manipulate. However, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by securing biomarkers within the strands of the developing hair. When cut close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 individual hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) located nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both assessment and verification. For tests like EtG, add-ons, and those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. It's recommended to weigh the hair using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be taken. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial or axillary.

Process Overview

There are four essential phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s system. This phase includes ensuring that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid evaluation for drugs. Although Screening is an economical method to rule out drug consumption in most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples suspected to be positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation process.

In cases where a sample is flagged as potentially positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than they are in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive screening result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All potentially positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards validation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a more limited detection period.
  • Difficult to compromise: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thereby ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It offers a detailed trend of drug usage across a duration, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: It generally takes 5 to 7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Outcome fluctuations: Elements such as the color of the hair and personal hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the subdermal follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
