Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Greendale, Indiana. Should you require a test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis and has facilities across cities nationwide to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary for testing. Results may include detection for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair analysis options.

In recent times, there has been a noticeable shift towards utilizing hair follicle drug tests for substance testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over conventional urine tests. Such tests are favored by employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and individuals under probation. A significant advantage of hair follicle testing is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that minimizes tampering. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the more precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within its growing fibers. When sampled near the scalp, hair reveals up to roughly a 3-month period of alcohol and drug use detection. It is straightforward to collect, tough to tamper with, and effortless to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (about a #2 pencil size) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Scalp hair refers exclusively to head hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in laboratory processing of drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial processing into the lab system. This phase verifies proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid drug abuse check. Despite being cost-effective for ruling out drugs in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples presumptive positive at this stage necessitate a secondary confirmation.

For presumptive positive results from Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs at much lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine, oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Confirming a positive screening involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing pre-confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed against CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug use back up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer shorter detection periods.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical insight: It provides a drug use pattern over time rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs generally become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair may be influenced by factors like hair color and individual growth variations.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
