Located in Greensboro, Indiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers full-spectrum hair follicle drug assessments. If a hair-based drug or alcohol test is required, choose our expertise in hair sample testing, available in numerous centers nationwide. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair, and our services cover drug, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing variations.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence in drug screening methods. Employers, court systems, and substance abuse experts now often favor hair testing over traditional urine tests. Ideal for organizations with no-tolerance policies, these tests are beneficial for their long detection window, up to 90 days, and their challenging nature for tampering. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment has evolved into a significant resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands’ fibers as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection period for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, slightly challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the prime sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional factors, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advocated. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unattainable, a similar volume of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair denotes other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for a drug test outcome encompasses four central steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary management of a sample into a laboratory system. This process confirms the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any extra information not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for potential drug presence. Though it is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive screen must be substantiated for court acceptability. Samples that are provisionally positive in Screening must undergo a follow-up confirmation.

For samples that test as provisionally positive during Screening, additional hair is gathered from the initial lot for Extraction. Drugs are then extracted from the hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), emphasizing the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Any screening results that show positive are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed before confirmation as necessary. Every step from Accessioning through to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, surpassing the shorter detection times of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: The ability to deceive a hair drug test is minimal, leading to more reliable results.
  • Provides historical insight: Reflects a pattern over time rather than only recent drug use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to incur higher costs than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Greensboro, IN, hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over traditional urine tests. With a longer detection window, it provides more comprehensive insights into an individual's drug history. Furthermore, hair testing's accuracy and difficulty to adulterate make it a more reliable choice compared to urine tests, which can miss longer-term drug use.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Greensboro, IN, excels with its extended detection period of up to 90 days. This allows employers to gain a more thorough understanding of an individual’s substance use history, aiding in better-informed hiring and workplace decisions, and surpassing the limitations of shorter-term detection methods like urine testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
