In Hagerstown, Indiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our specialty is hair testing, available at nationwide centers that facilitate such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair analysis checks for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized as per requirement.

The preference for drug testing methods has tilted towards hair follicle tests recently. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse experts are leaning on hair drug tests over urine ones. For those with zero-tolerance policies or on probation, hair follicle tests are favorable due to their longer drug detection window, up to 90 days, and supervised collection, making deception difficult. Nevertheless, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests maintain higher accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands, hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect specimen for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair can be sourced. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (i.e., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the introductory handling of a sample within a lab's system. This entails ensuring the sample was sealed and sent properly, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening features an initial brief evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result needs validation to be court-admissible. All samples that initially test positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. At this point, drugs are isolated from hair at a substantially lower concentration relative to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug tests can identify substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Challenging to falsify: Manipulating hair drug tests is highly challenging, enhancing the results' accuracy.
  • Reveals historical usage: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the scalp-located hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
