Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Hamilton, Indiana. Need a hair or alcohol test? We're hair testing experts with centers across all cities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair suffices. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other hair analysis needs.

Lately, the reliance on hair follicle testing for drug detection has surged. Employers, the judiciary, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly prefer hair tests over urine ones. Businesses with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probation cases favor this method. Its main advantage is the elongated detection reach, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it virtually foolproof. However, for drug use in the last 5 days, urine testing remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair fibers capture biomarkers of alcohol and drugs, offering a retrospective timeline when collected near the scalp, with a detection scope of roughly three months for various substances. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A section of hair measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands (about the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For tests such as EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. Should scalp hair not be obtainable, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test outcomes involves four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is integrated into the lab’s system. It ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) at random, and inputs any additional needed information not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs. While Screening is relatively inexpensive, a positive result must undergo further confirmation to be eligible for legal processes. Any sample that indicates positive in Screening requires a subsequent confirmation step.

For samples that show positive in Screening, more hair is selected from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair, albeit at much lower concentrations than in methods like urine or oral fluid testing, which is why this methodology poses challenges.

Confirmation testing for any positive screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary washing is performed on presumptive positive samples before confirmation. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the lab procedure undergoes inspection adhering to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating hair drug tests is extremely tough, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Shows usage patterns: Displays drug consumption patterns over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify immediate use: Detection in hair takes around 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Price: Hair drug assessment tends to be pricier than alternate testing methods.
  • Result variances: Variations such as hair color or growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," it is actually the hair strand that's analyzed, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hamilton, IN, hair follicle testing outshines urine testing due to its superior precision and trustworthiness. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis can identify substance use over a longer duration with greater certainty.
Employers value the comprehensive insights hair testing brings, sparing them potential inaccuracies and providing a more reliable screening choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
