Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Hartsville, Indiana. For those requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is supported by centers in every major city across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the crown or body. Such tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have emerged as a prominent method for substance screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are now opting for this over the standard urine analyses. Ideal for zero-tolerance settings, courts, and probationers, hair tests boast an extended detection period of about 90 days. Collection occurs under supervision, minimizing cheating, while urine tests remain most accurate for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of developing hair strands. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection range of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG assays, supplementary tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be substituted. By 'head hair,' we specifically mean scalp hair. 'Body hair' encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential phases in lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a specimen into a lab's database. This process involves verifying that the specimen was appropriately sealed and transported, creating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data input not captured by an electronic custody documentation system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers an economical means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate subsequent verification.

For samples that are presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can ascertain drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection window.
  • Hard to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical tracking: It provides an insight into the pattern of drug use over an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
