Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Indian Springs, Indiana. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and we have test facilities in all major cities across the Nation for such tests. Typically, hair from the head's crown or other body hair, at a minimum length of 1.5 to 2 inches, is suitable. We offer analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom hair test options.

In current times, the trend in drug testing has increasingly favored the hair follicle drug test method. Many businesses, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts mandate hair drug tests over the usual urine screenings. Employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, along with courts and probationary departments, utilize hair follicle tests. The greater appeal of hair testing lies in its extended detection timeline for drug usage, potentially spanning up to 90 days. This method supports observed sample collections, severely limiting deceit. Yet, for identifying drug use beyond the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture a timeline of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When cut close to the scalp, hair offers about a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drug traces. The collection process is straightforward, making it relatively tamper-resistant and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and confirmation. For tests including EtG, additional elements, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for accuracy. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory's records. This step verifies proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes supplementary data entry absent in electronic chain of custody systems.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for drug abuse. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening must undergo further confirmation testing.

For samples with positive results in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for further Extraction. This phase isolates drugs from hair at much lower levels compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of positive Screening results is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair within approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite levels in hair can be influenced by factors such as hair color and growth rates.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
