In Kempton, Indiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers a thorough hair follicle substance screening service. If there's a need for a hair drug or alcohol examination, our company excels in this field, with facilities nationwide also equipped to handle hair assessments. A sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is generally sufficient. Hair analyses can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing choices.

Recently, the inclusion of hair follicle analysis in drug testing has gained popularity. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine analysis. Hair tests appeal to employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and those on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle tests lies in their extended detection time, which spans up to 90 days; collection is supervised, and cheating is nearly impossible. Despite this, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term data on alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strands that are growing. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximately three-month detection range for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, fairly challenging to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample for initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary quick assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, court-admissible positive screens must be confirmed. Samples presumptively positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves removing drugs from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation if required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • High integrity: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a pattern of drug consumption over an extended timeframe, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can affect the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
