In Kingsbury, Indiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our expertise includes hair testing for drugs and alcohol, with facilities available nationwide. Hair samples should be 1.5 to 2 inches long from the scalp or body. We provide analysis for substance use, including customizable options for drugs and alcohol/ETG testing.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for substance detection. It's often preferred over urine testing by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. This type of test is favored by those with zero-tolerance drug policies and for probation monitoring, offering a major advantage due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days. Though highly effective, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying substance use. Hair offers a retrospective account of substance exposure by embedding biomarkers within the hair shaft. When obtained near the head, hair samples can present a detection period extending up to roughly three months for alcohol and various substances. Hair collections are straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) harvested close to the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, which is the optimal portion for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, supplementary analyses, or screenings exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It is recommended to weigh the collection using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we are referring exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses any other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the intake and initial handling of a specimen within a lab's system. This step encompasses the verification of proper sample sealing and dispatch, the assignment of a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and the completion of any necessary data input not addressed by a digital custody chain system.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift assessment for drug substances. Although Screening represents a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug consumption in most samples, a positive finding during Screening necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that show presumptive positivity during Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample display presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the original collection for Extraction preparation. In this step, substance extraction from hair occurs at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug analysis is considered the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screened outcome takes place through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug analyses can trace substance use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The challenge in tampering with hair drug analyses enhances the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It enables the detailing of usage trends over time, unlike immediate use detection.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to appear detectable in hair samples.
  • Cost: Relative to other testing techniques, hair drug analyses tend to incur higher costs.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences may impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
