Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Kingsford Heights, Indiana. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing spans all cities nationwide, with centers capable of administering these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body can usually be used for analysis to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or for other tailored testing options.

Over the past few years, hair follicle testing has increasingly become a preferred drug testing method. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts opt for hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. Employers upholding strict drug-free policies, court systems, and probation officers rely on hair testing, which offers a detection window of up to 90 days. Despite this, urine tests remain more effective for identifying drug use within a five-day period.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as an effective method, hair testing serves as a key instrument for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers into its growing strands. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair presents a straightforward collection process, is relatively resistant to tampering, and is convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (equal to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair could be used. When we mention head hair, we're specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome includes four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab's system. This phase ensures the sample's seal and shipping integrity, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any extra data entry overlooked by an electronic chain of custody system.

In the Screening phase, samples undergo an initial check for drug abuse. Although it's an economical way to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples yielding a presumptive positive during Screening need subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is removed from the initial sample for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening an especially complex methodology.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. Every stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely tough, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: This method traces drug use patterns over time, in contrast to only recent use detection.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand rather than the under-scalp hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
