Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lake Hills, Indiana. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing is unmatched in its expertise in hair testing, boasting centers Nationwide ready to conduct hair tests in every city. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body are required. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent, overtaking traditional methods. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now often prefer hair drug tests over routine urine analyses. Hair follicle testing is invaluable for zero-tolerance organizations, legal checks, and probation conditions due to its broad detection span—up to 90 days, via a monitored collection process, making it nearly tamper-proof. Yet, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests retain their accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an influential method in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the growing hair fibers, hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and other drug use. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 strands of hair (approximately resembling a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advised. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair denotes any other hair type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing within a laboratory's system. This phase ensures the sample is sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses any additional data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid drug abuse check. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally admissible. All samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample exhibits a presumptive positive result during the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if required. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is thoroughly reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to the accreditation standards of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty in deception: It is exceptionally challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a timeline of drug use patterns, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unavailable for recent usage detection: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other methods.
  • Variability in results: Influences like hair color and individual hair growth differences can affect drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Though generally termed "hair follicle tests," this test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Lake Hills, IN is superior to traditional urine tests in many ways. Hair tests offer a wider detection window, detecting drug use over a long period and providing a fuller behavioral picture. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
