Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Laotto, Indiana. For those needing hair or alcohol assessments, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field, offering centers nationwide equipped for hair analysis. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is typically needed. Hair screenings can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, alongside other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug assessments have increasingly become the preferred method for drug detection. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine samples. Employers with strict no-drug policies favor hair analysis, as do courts and probation services. Its main advantage is a longer detection time frame of up to 90 days, with supervised collection minimizing tampering chances. However, urine tests remain the gold standard for identifying recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug or alcohol presence. Hair offers an extended overview of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they develop. When taken from the scalp, hair can reveal usage details for as long as three months for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the ideal sample for analysis. For EtG, additional checks, and/or screens beyond 10 panels, it is preferable to have 150mg. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent mass of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair forms like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The essential phases in the lab procedure for a drug assessment result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s framework. This entails checking the sample’s sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails a fast initial evaluation for substance misuse. While Screening offers a budget-friendly option to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Any samples flagged in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

If Screening results are prescriptive positive, additional hair is taken from the sample and set for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at much lesser concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), signifying hair drug testing as the most complex methodology.

Any positive Screening outcomes are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked as potentially positive are cleaned prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can reveal drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely hard, ensuring the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a pattern of substance usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can affect drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", this type examines the hair strand rather than the scalp’s underlying follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
