At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Leavenworth, Indiana. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you need, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities nationwide ready to conduct the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other specific options.

Hair follicle testing for drug detection has become more prevalent in recent times. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts are favoring this method over traditional urine tests. Employers with stringent anti-drug policies, as well as court systems and probation officers, utilize hair drug tests. Their advantage is a longer timeframe for detecting drug use, usually up to 90 days, with supervised collection, making tampering unlikely. However, for immediate past drug use, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The structure of hair strands captures biomarkers over an extended period aiding in tracking the presence of substances. When gathered close to the scalp, hair samples can detect substances for a period extending up to three months. Collecting hair is uncomplicated, relatively tamper-proof, and easily transportable.

A collection of roughly 200 hair strands (about 1.5 inches and comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) from near the scalp provides 100mg, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale for specimen weight is recommended. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair might suffice. Reference to head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, samples are initially integrated into the laboratory system, ensuring correct sealing and shipping, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry required outside of an electronic custody chain.

Screening serves as a preliminary, economical examination for substance abuse. Although it's efficient in excluding drug use for most samples, any positive result in Screening mandates further confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples deemed presumptively positive from Screening necessitate secondary validation.

When a sample suggests a positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the specimen for the Extraction phase. This stage involves extracting drugs at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening methodology.

Confirmation of any positive result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a necessary washing before confirmation. Every step from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to falsify: The accuracy of hair drug tests is enhanced due to the difficulty in tampering.
  • Provides historical insights: Hair analysis can reveal drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Characteristics like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly known as "hair follicle tests", this assessment evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outperform traditional urine tests in Leavenworth, IN? The answer lies in their superior accuracy and reliability. Hair testing identifies drug use patterns over a longer span, unlike typical urine tests that only cover recent use.
The comprehensive detection capability of hair tests is particularly beneficial to employers seeking a thorough assessment of an individual's substance history, ensuring workplace integrity.

Extended Detection Window

When considering extended detection capabilities in Leavenworth, IN, hair follicle testing takes precedence. These tests review substance use for up to 90 days, providing a broad overview of an individual's past.
This extended window offers employers a clearer understanding of an applicant or employee's habits, aiding in making well-informed decisions to maintain a safe and productive work environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests makes them a preferred choice in Leavenworth, IN. Unlike other methods, these tests significantly lower the risk of adulteration, delivering trustworthy and consistent results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
