Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Lewisville, Indiana. For those needing drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, our specialty lies in hair testing, with centers available nationwide. Testing requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, usually taken from the head or body, and can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized further.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. These tests are ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces and probationary individuals due to extended detection periods of up to 90 days and are conducted under observation, minimizing cheating. While hair tests excel in longer detection, urine tests are more accurate for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and hassle-free to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, a proportional amount of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a specimen within a lab's system. It involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, but a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are at a much lower concentration within hair compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screening can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine testing offers a shorter window.
  • Difficult to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely hard, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It can indicate drug usage patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically tend to cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lewisville, IN, hair follicle tests surpass traditional urine tests through superior accuracy and reliability. With an extended detection period, they offer a clearer picture of an individual's substance use history. While urine tests might falter due to shorter detection spans, hair tests excel with up to 90-day coverage. Such precision aids employers in maintaining drug-free environments.

Hair testing's versatility in detection highlights its importance in drug screening. Lewisville's professionals recognize its broad-spectrum capabilities, making it a preferred choice. Accuracy is paramount, and hair testing's track record affirms its capacity to deliver consistent results, unlike urine tests that might miss longer-term use. Employers appreciate the significant insights provided by hair testing.

Extended Detection Window

The remarkable extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Lewisville, IN, spans up to 90 days. This extensive period offers employers invaluable insights into an individual's substance use history, providing a comprehensive assessment that urine tests cannot match. Such detailed histories help companies make informed decisions regarding employment and maintain drug-free workplaces.

A 90-day detection span allows hair follicle tests to reveal substance patterns that shorter-termed tests might miss. In Lewisville, businesses are keen on leveraging this advantage, obtaining an extensive view into behaviors that can impact workplace safety. It's an unchallenged tool in evaluating both current employees and new applicants, ensuring clarity on past drug use trends.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
