Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Linden, Indiana. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have facilities spread across all Nationwide cities prepared for these tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is generally required. The hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular choice for drug screening. This method is favored by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation often prefer this. The key advantage is the extended detection timeframe, which spans up to 90 days, is conducted under supervision, and is invulnerable to tampering. For the most accurate results on recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests are still preferred.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a detailed history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When gathered close to the scalp, it offers a detection window extending up to 3 months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler's scale for measuring the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug tests encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial intake into the lab's system. This involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and couriered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a quick preliminary check for drug presence. While it's a budget-friendly approach for detecting drug use in most samples, only a confirmed positive screen holds up in court. Samples returning presumptive positives in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

For samples with presumptive positive results during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. This step entails withdrawing drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive results from screening undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples may be washed before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug activity up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It charts a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than only highlighting recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: A delay of 5-7 days occurs before drugs become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences may impact the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
