Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Livonia, Indiana. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with locations available in cities all across the Nation to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be used. Hair tests can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke hair testing choices.

Lately, drug testing methods have increasingly involved the use of hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extensive drug use detection span, typically up to 90 days, collected under supervised conditions, and are extremely difficult to cheat. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Identified as an effective method to reveal drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing has gained acceptance. Hair captures markers of alcohol and other drugs within the strands as they grow, offering a retrospective timeline. When taken near the scalp, these strands can yield a detection range spanning up to about three months for various substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to send off.

For optimal analysis, procuring a 1.5-inch snippet, roughly 200 strands in thickness (comparable to a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields an ideal 100mg sample. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond ten, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's suggested to determine the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair may be utilized. Here, head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other varieties (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four fundamental stages in the lab analysis of drug testing: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the sample's initial handling into the laboratory system. This process involves confirming the sample's correct sealing and shipping, generating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizing any supplementary data not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment to detect substance misuse. While Screening is cost-efficient in excluding drug use in most instances, only a corroborated positive is acceptable in legal settings. Samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening anticipate further validation.

For samples tentatively positive at the Screening phase, more hair is retrieved from the initial batch for the Extraction process. This phase involves isolating drugs from the hair at significantly lower levels than techniques like urine or oral fluid tests, highlighting the challenges of executing hair drug screenings.

To validate any positive findings from the screening, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methodologies are employed for Confirmation. Presumptive positive specimens undergo a cleansing step if required before confirmation. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny in accordance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for periods reaching 90 days, unlike urine tests that cover shorter durations.
  • High tampering resistance: The challenge of manipulating hair drug tests enhances result reliability.
  • Retroactive analysis: Offers insights into drug consumption trends rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage detection limits: Drugs generally become noticeable in hair within 5-7 days.
  • Costs: Typically, hair drug tests incur higher expenses compared to other testing forms.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair pigmentation and individual growth patterns can modify drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Frequently mischaracterized as "hair follicle tests", this method actually scrutinizes the hair strand, not the underlying follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
