Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Mackey, Indiana. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, our focus is on hair testing, with accessible testing centers in cities across the Nation capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be utilized. Hair tests are suitable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other custom testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for substance screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are increasingly opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These are favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probationary individuals. The core advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window for drug usage, which can span up to 90 days, is conducted under observation, and is highly tamper-proof. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the superior choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection history lasting up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to mail.

A specimen measuring 1.5 inches and comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a minimum of 150mg of the sample is advised. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. References to head hair mean scalp hair only, whereas body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result consists of four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning represents the initial phase of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This stage ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes remaining data input tasks not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assay for substances of abuse. Although Screening presents a cost-effective option for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result from Screening requires a follow-up confirmation for admissibility in court. Samples with a presumptive positive result from Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for preparation in Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Verification of any positive Screening outcomes is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All samples marked as presumptive positive undergo cleansing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests provide a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: The difficulty in falsifying a hair drug test enhances the reliability of its results.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than focusing solely on recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair after a span of approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Differences in hair color and individual hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
