Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Madison, Indiana. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair analysis, and we provide testing centers nationwide ready to administrate hair tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is necessary. Hair screenings may analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent years, incorporating hair follicle testing for drugs has become more prevalent. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair screening over typical urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection time—up to 90 days, observed in a controlled collection environment, making manipulation almost impossible. For recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol usage. Hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When cut near the scalp, hair can present a detection timeframe of roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. It's advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent portion of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, it refers to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s records. This process ensures the sample was correctly sealed and sent, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any missing data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for drug presence. While Screening is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug usage for the majority of samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal validity. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening outcomes are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if required. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to cheating: Hair drug tests are challenging to deceive, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
