In Mays, Indiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing is complemented by testing centers available in all cities Nationwide. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, these tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific testing needs.

Over recent years, drug testing practices have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. These tests are being mandated by employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse professionals instead of the urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal courts, and probation supervision favor these tests due to their ability to detect drug use over a longer window of up to 90 days through supervised collections, offering a test that's nearly foolproof. Despite this, urine tests remain most accurate for very recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as the hair grows. When taken from near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug use over an approximately 3-month period. Hair samples are easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to mail.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 strands of hair (similar in width to a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG and other expanded tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, the same quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair covers all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in the lab involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial processing of a sample within the lab’s system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data entry that wasn’t covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a rapid preliminary check for drugs. Though cost-effective for ruling out the presence of drugs in most samples, positive screens must be verified for legal admissibility. Any samples that test positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

For samples testing positive in Screening, further hair is taken from the initial collection and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a far lesser concentration compared to other tests (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to conduct.

The Confirmation of a positive screen is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples initially testing positive are washed as necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It can depict a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs typically take 5-7 days before showing up in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle itself.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Mays, IN, hair follicle testing is increasingly preferred over traditional urine tests. Advantages include superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests can reveal a history of drug use for up to 90 days, a considerable improvement over urine tests, which are limited to detecting more recent use. This extended window allows for more thorough evaluations.

Compared to urine tests, hair testing reduces risk of sample tampering. The reliable nature of collecting a hair sample under observation further enhances the integrity of the results, ensuring that any attempts to cheat are substantially minimized, thus offering confidence in test outcomes.

Extended Detection Window

In Mays, IN, hair follicle testing offers a pivotal advantage with its extended detection window. Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days back, it gives employers a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history, surpassing the brief detection timeline of urine tests, which only cover the last few days.

For employers, this extended window is crucial, especially when vetting potential hires or monitoring current employees. It provides a broader perspective, ensuring higher accuracy in detecting not just one-off incidents, but patterns of usage over time.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Mays, IN, represent a tamper-resistant drug testing method. By significantly reducing the chance of sample adulteration, these tests guarantee reliable and unquestionable results, providing a higher degree of accuracy compared to traditional methods.

This resistance to tampering is one of the key benefits for employers. The integrity of the testing process means that results are trustworthy, fostering a safer and more secure environment in workplaces where substance policy compliance is crucial.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
