Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis throughout Metz, Indiana. For those requiring drug or alcohol assessments via hair, our specialization in hair testing extends nationally with centers ready to assist. Ideally, a sample length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is needed. The range of detectable substances includes drugs, alcohol/ETG along with tailored testing choices.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred drug screening method. Employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists are opting for hair analysis over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial authorities, and probation services. Its key advantage lies in a longer detection time frame, reaching 90 days, secured through a monitored collection, making deceit nearly futile. That said, urine assessments remain the primary choice for very recent drug activity typically within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged history of alcohol and various drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) located nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid drug check. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for it to be legally valid. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is drawn from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a remarkably lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

The Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides historical insight: Allows detection of drug use patterns over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although sometimes termed "hair follicle tests", the actual test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
