Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Monon, Indiana. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we offer expert analyses with Nationwide centers ready for hair tests. Having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is typically needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or may be tailored for other specific testing requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug testing practices. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are ideal for employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary programs because they offer a longer detection window, generally up to 90 days, are obtained through observed collection, and are hard to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying drug use in the preceding 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can offer an extended historical profile of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to alter, and convenient to mail.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses involving over ten panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair may be utilized. When referring to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (like facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data not entered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary test for drugs of abuse. Despite being a cost-effective measure to dismiss drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be substantiated to be permissible in legal proceedings. Any samples that show a presumptive positive result in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is drawn from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at far lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

For Confirmation of a positive screening result, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed. Any samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing the precision of results.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals patterns of drug use over time, rather than just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair strands.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing options.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the strand of hair and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
