Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Moores Hill, Indiana. Our facilities across the country offer specialized hair drug and alcohol testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas are required for analysis. Hair samples can be tested for various substances, including drugs and alcohol (ETG), or tailored according to specific testing needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity for drug screening in recent years. They are increasingly being favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. These tests are preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial authorities, and probation officers due to their longer detection times, which can span up to 90 days. The collection process is supervised, making it extremely difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By encasing biomarkers within the fibers of actively growing hair, hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug usage. When sourced near the scalp, hair has a detection period of approximately up to 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, with slight difficulty to tamper, and is easily shipped.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil in size) adjacent to the scalp yields approximately 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for screening and confirming. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferred. It is advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other types (such as facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis process for a drug test result consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of initial integration of a sample into the lab's system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any pending data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug consumption in most cases, a positive finding requires validation to be admissible legally. Samples that are presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further verification.

Should a sample be deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentration levels than with alternate techniques (such as urine or saliva), thus making hair drug testing one of the more challenging methodologies to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as deemed necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accords to ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter window.
  • Challenging to game: It is highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can show patterns of substance use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
