Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Nabb, Indiana. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair tests, with testing facilities in cities across the country to conduct a hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used. Hair screenings can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair analyses.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, the courts, and probation individuals often utilize hair follicle drug tests. The main advantage is a significantly extended detection period for drug use, generally up to 90 days, with supervised collection and minimal risk of cheating. However, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting drug use in the previous 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a long-lasting record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around 90 days for alcohol and other substances. This method is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and affirming. For EtG, extra tests, or panels beyond 10, a sample size of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When we talk about head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in processing a drug test in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning an anonymous LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial swift inspection for substance misuse. Although Screening economically rules out drug usage in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples flagged positive in Screening do require subsequent confirmation.

Should a Screening result be positive, extra hair is drawn from the primary sample and processed for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which poses a significant challenge in hair drug screening.

Confirmation of a positive screen is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation, as needed. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can track drug use for as many as 90 days, in contrast to the briefer detection times in urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to cheat, ensuring precise results.
  • Historical insight: This method can illustrate a drug use pattern over a span of time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not for recent use detection: Drugs become noticeable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur more cost than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", it is the strand and not the scalp's follicle that gets examined.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
