Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in New Palestine, Indiana. Whether you require a drug or alcohol test, our expertise is in hair testing with facilities available nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be utilized. These tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer various customized options.

In recent times, drug testing methodologies increasingly incorporate hair follicle tests. More employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair tests over traditional urine ones. These tests are favored by strict employers, courts, and those on probation. Their key advantage is a longer detection window for drug use, usually up to 90 days, observed collection, and resilience against tampering, while urine tests remain the most accurate for recent use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a robust method for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands' growing fibers. When cut close to the scalp, a hair sample offers a detection window of roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of about 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. By "head hair," we mean scalp hair solely. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the primary integration of a sample into a lab’s database. This checks if the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for the presence of drugs. Though Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to hold in a legal setting. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

If Screening indicates a sample as presumptively positive, further hair from the initial specimen is extracted for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate procedure to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug evaluations can pinpoint drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests boast a shorter detection timeline.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It offers a trace of drug use over time, not mere recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as “hair follicle tests”, the examination concerns the hair strand instead of the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
