Serving New Trenton, Indiana, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, we offer services nationwide. With testing centers in every city, hair samples needing 1.5 to 2 inches can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

The popularity of hair follicle drug testing has increased among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, favoring it over standard urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies and courts rely on hair tests due to their extended detection of up to 90 days, observed collection, and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain accurate for detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an efficient method to identify substance and alcohol consumption. Hair embodies a comprehensive history of substances and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the lengthening hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair provides an approximate 3-month time frame for identifying substances and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to obtain, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

Collecting a 1.5-inch section of around 200 hairs (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfectly suited sample for initial checks and verification. For EtG, extras, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. In terms of head hair, scalp hair specifically is implied. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The critical phases in the lab processing of a substance test result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data entry needed not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial swift assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to rule out substance use on the bulk of samples, a positive result in screening must be verified to be permissible in legal scenarios. Any samples with presumptive positive results during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample exhibits a positive indication during the Screening stage, extra hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, substances are isolated from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair substance screening is the most intricate procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a comparatively shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to falsify: Maneuvering around a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It offers a depiction of substance use over a span of time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Variable outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the evaluation focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
