Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments right in North Terre Haute, Indiana. For those seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing extends across nationwide centers that are equipped to conduct hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required, either from the scalp or body. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer various tailored testing configurations.

Hair follicle drug tests have become an increasingly common method in recent times for drug screening. Favored by employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals, these tests are often preferred over traditional urine analyses. Organizations with zero-tolerance for drug usage, judicial systems, and probation officers rely on them. The key advantage is the prolonged detection span of up to 90 days, making it difficult to falsify results. Nevertheless, urine tests maintain accuracy for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. If gathered close to the scalp, hair can offer an approximate three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It's advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is lacking, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. The term "head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases engaged in the laboratory processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory’s database. This step confirms the secure sealing and proper shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick assessment for abused substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient strategy to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples testing presumptively positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

In the event that a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This process involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if deemed necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, a longer duration compared to urine tests.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Historical data provision: Hair testing can outline a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Genetic factors, hair color, and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
