A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is usually required from the scalp or body. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customize to specific needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a more common methodology for screening in recent years. This method is preferred by many employers, legal systems, and professionals dealing with substance abuse, instead of traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, legal courts, and probationary individuals depend on these tests. Hair follicle testing’s primary advantage is its extended drug detection period, up to 90 days. However, a urine test remains more accurate for detections within a 5-day frame.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair's structure. If gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This process involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data input not available via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial assessment for the presence of drug abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method for ruling out drug presence in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. Every step from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage: Offers insight into drug use patterns over time, not solely recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.
