Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle screening in Ragsdale, Indiana. Specializing in hair tests for drugs or alcohol, we have centers nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are needed for accurate testing. Results can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has become a popular choice for drug screening. This method is increasingly required by employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists over traditional urine tests. It's ideal for zero-tolerance policies, and for those on probation, offering detection for drugs up to 90 days, under observed conditions, and is notably secure from tampering. However, for recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a formidable instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the continuously growing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can deliver up to about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Its collection is straightforward, tampering is quite challenging, and it can be transported with ease.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is suggested. We advise measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. In discussions about head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the introductory processing of a sample into the lab's system. This process verifies the sample's sealed and shipped status, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening is an economical method to negate drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples that preliminarily test positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample initially test positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the primary specimen and prepped for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to conduct.

The verification of any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use history, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Ragsdale, IN, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine testing due to its extended detection efficacy. Hair tests provide more comprehensive coverage and higher result accuracy, reducing substance abuse risks in workplaces.

Unlike urine tests, hair follicle testing captures a detailed drug use history, presenting a robust tracking method over an elongated period, minimizing false negatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
