Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Reynolds, Indiana. Whether you need a test for drugs or alcohol, our national network of centers specializes in hair testing, including unique options. Hair must be 1.5 to 2 inches long from the scalp or body for most tests. These hair tests can detect various substances including drugs and alcohol/ETG.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly adopted for drug screenings. This method is favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. It's particularly useful for organizations with strict no-drug policies, as it offers a longer detection window of up to 90 days, requires supervised sample collection, and is difficult to tamper with, although for detecting recent usage within the past 5 days, urine testing remains most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged record of alcohol and substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When clipped closely to the scalp, it can reveal a historical usage pattern spanning nearly 3 months for both alcohol and substances. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately challenging to tamper with, and straightforward for transportation.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from about 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional analysis, and/or tests extending beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement is advised. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar volume of body hair can be gathered. The term head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encapsulates facial, axillary, and other types.

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result primarily encompasses four phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab’s system, which includes ensuring the sample’s proper seal and shipment, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing supplementary data entry not completed by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening consists of an expedited inspection for drugs of abuse. While it is an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that indicate presumptive positives during Screening therefore require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly reduced concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples indicating presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation if required. The laboratory process spanning Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and is aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can highlight drug usage up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Challenge in manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historic data provision: This testing can showcase a usage pattern over a timeframe, beyond immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Typically, it requires 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expenditure: Hair drug tests generally incur more costs compared to alternate testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
