Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Rockdale, Indiana. If you're in need of tests for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair analysis is unparalleled, with numerous testing facilities available in cities across the nation ready to conduct these evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

In recent times, the adoption of hair follicle drug testing has surged. Several employers, legal systems, and experts in substance abuse now prefer hair drug tests over common urine tests. Organizations maintaining strict drug-free environments, courts, or individuals on probation find this method particularly useful. The key advantage is the lengthened timeframe for drug identification, usually up to 90 days, conducted under direct supervision, making it nearly impossible to manipulate. Yet, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting substance use within the immediate past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a timeline for alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strands. When sourced near the scalp, hair offers up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and hassle-free to send.

A 1.5-inch segment, approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for analysis and affirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't present, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. When we mention head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the entry of a specimen into a lab’s system. This encompasses validating the specimen’s seal and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial rapid test for illicit substances. While Screening is an economical method for excluding drug usage in most specimens, a positive screen demands confirmation to be valid in court. Any specimens tentatively positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a specimen be tentatively positive during the Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are taken from hair at far lesser concentrations compared to alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples undergo a cleansing prior to confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug testing identifies substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It offers a pattern of substance use over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs more cost than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
