Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rockville, Indiana. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing ensures access nationwide. Our testing centers can conduct the test, provided you have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more favored method in drug testing for employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals. Increasingly, they opt for hair drug tests over urine tests. This testing method is crucial for employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies and for courts overseeing individuals on probation. Hair testing's major advantage is its longer detection window of up to 90 days, collected under strict observation, and almost impossible to manipulate, although urine tests remain superior for recent drug use within a five-day span.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized for its efficacy in identifying substance use. Hair offers an extended snapshot of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the hair's developing fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of close to three months for substances. Collecting this sample is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and transporting the sample is convenient.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a standard pencil), when taken from the scalp, provides approximately 100mg, which is optimal for both preliminary screening and detailed confirmation tests. For tests involving EtG or exceedance of 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers strictly to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other types such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for drug testing consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the sample's entry into a laboratory system. This phase ensures the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any needed data not included in an electronic custody system.

Screening is a preliminary test for drugs. While Screening is economically efficient to eliminate drug use in most cases, a positive result requires validation to be legally defensible. Presumptively positive samples from Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for further analysis. This phase involves drug extraction from hair at significantly lower levels compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most complex methodology.

Positive screening outcomes are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmatory testing as required. Throughout the laboratory procedure, from the initial Accessioning to final Confirmation, processes adhere to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Strengths of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests trace drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have limited detection periods.
  • Resistance to tampering: The accuracy of hair drug test results is bolstered by the challenge of test manipulation.
  • Historical insight: These tests reveal patterns of drug usage over time, unlike methods focusing on recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to trace recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair within approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are comparatively pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled "hair follicle tests", these analyses examine the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
