Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Saint Bernice, Indiana. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing's expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers available in every major city Nationwide to conduct such tests. Hair length should be 1.5 to 2 inches on the scalp, but body hair can often be used. Hair analysis can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now opt for hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. Hair testing is preferred by those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial institutions, and individuals on probation. A significant advantage of hair tests is their extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected through an observed process that makes tampering nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use, urine tests remain the most precise within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal usage of alcohol and other substances over an approximate three-month period. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of about 200 hair strands (resembling the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or testing beyond ten panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is absent, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a laboratory's system, which involves checking that the sample was securely sealed and correctly shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective strategy to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a confirmed positive result is necessary for legal proceedings. All samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require a further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is sourced from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to carry out.

Confirmation for any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. During Confirmation, all samples that are presumptively positive are washed as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It's considerably difficult to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical tracking: It can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly described as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand, not the hair follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
