In Scotland, Indiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing solutions. If you require a test for drugs or alcohol via hair sampling, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert, providing services in every city across the country and capable of conducting the test. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown, but body hair is also acceptable. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific analyses.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common standard for drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers due to their extended drug detection period, generally up to 90 days, with an observed and nearly foolproof collection process. For drug use detection within the last five days, urine testing remains the superior choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair offers an extended history of drug and alcohol consumption by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can indicate use of drugs and alcohol for up to an approximately 3-month period. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 strands of hair (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional components, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. We refer to head hair specifically as scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes verifying the sample's seal and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an expedited check for drugs of abuse. Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage for most samples, but a positive screen mandates confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at far lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology to execute.

Positive screening results are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: Hair drug tests are hard to cheat, ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: Hair testing can show a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Influences like hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often referred to as "hair follicle tests," analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
