Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Sharptown, Indiana. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in hair testing, providing centers in numerous cities throughout the country that can administer this test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specifics.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method for drug screening. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair tests over standard urine tests. This method is favored by zero-tolerance employers, legal entities, and probation officers. A key advantage is its extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, conducted with oversight, and difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair tests has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the hair fiber as it grows. When hair is collected from the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use over a period of up to three months. Hair collection is easy, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands of hair (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, other add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to collect 150mg of the specimen. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. In cases where scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar amount of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four major steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is introduced into the laboratory system. It involves ensuring the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that might not be provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment to check for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use for most samples, confirming a positive screen is necessary for it to hold up in court. Samples indicating a presumptive positive result in Screening need further confirmation.

In cases where a sample shows a presumptive positive result in Screening, more hair is taken from the initial batch and prepped for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from the hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive outcome are washed as required before confirmation. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably hard, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical data provision: It can reveal a timeline of drug use, not just immediate or recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after a period of approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair samples.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
