Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive drug evaluations using hair follicle testing in Shelby, Indiana. If you're seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, rely on our specialized services available at numerous centers Nationwide. Typically, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or elsewhere can be tested. Our procedures can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other testing needs.

In the past few years, drug testing methods have more often included hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are shifting to hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle assessments serve zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and those on probation by offering extended detection capabilities, up to 90 days. This process is observed, tough to falsify, yet urine tests remain best for detecting usage within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. It offers a prolonged record of substance use by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to around three months for both alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to send by mail.

A 1.5-inch sample, roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for evaluation and validation. For tests such as EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is suggested. It's advised to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent measure of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes drug test results through four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's entry into a laboratory system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data required outside an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it's an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if needed. Each step from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the standards of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, along with the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to cheat, enhancing the precision of results.
  • Historical insights: They provide a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days before becoming detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and personal hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outshine urine testing in Shelby, IN? Hair tests offer heightened detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair testing effectively reveals long-term substance use with greater precision.

Transitioning from urine to hair follicle testing gives a robust advantage: longer detection periods. Shelby's adoption of this method strengthens drug policy enforcement, ensuring a safer and more compliant work environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
