Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Somerville, Indiana. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing has a strong emphasis on hair testing, with available testing centers in cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailor-made hair testing options.

In recent times, drug testing approaches have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Organizations such as employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by zero-tolerance employers, legal systems, and individuals on probation. The primary advantage is the extended detection period, often up to 90 days, with observed collection making it near-impossible to tamper. However, for detecting recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting substance use. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within its fibers during growth. Hair obtained close to the scalp can show a detection window of approximately 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp offers 100mg, the optimal amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferable. We advise using a jeweler's scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab handling of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary input of a sample into a lab’s system. This phase involves validating that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails an initial brief analysis for drugs of concern. Although Screening serves as a cost-effective technique for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result must undergo confirmation to be valid in a legal context. Any samples that are potentially positive in Screening will require a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show preliminary positivity in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this step, drugs are isolated from the hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most complex procedure.

Confirmation of any detected substances during screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are initially positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter window.
  • Hard to falsify: It is exceedingly difficult to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Gives historical insights: It reveals a pattern of substance use over a period, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth might influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing surpass urine testing in Somerville, IN? Simply put, hair testing offers superior detection and reliability. While urine tests capture recent drug use, hair tests provide a comprehensive view over a prolonged duration. This extended scope gives employers and legal bodies a more holistic insight into patterns of substance use, reaffirming the test's unmatched efficacy and accuracy.

Extended Detection Window

In Somerville, IN, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing is a game-changer. Capable of identifying substance use over up to 90 days, this method empowers employers with a comprehensive perspective on an individual's history. This broadened scope is invaluable for assessing long-term patterns of use, enabling better-informed hiring and supervision decisions in workplace environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
