Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Spring Lake, Indiana. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing ensures we employ testing facilities across all cities Nationwide to execute a hair test. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head’s crown; alternatively, body hair is applicable in many instances. These tests can be identified for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized hair testing choices.

Recently, drug testing strategies are increasingly integrating hair follicle examinations. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists are preferring hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, judiciary systems, and individuals under probation. The main advantage of a hair test is its prolonged detection timeframe of drug intake, usually up to 90 days, obtained through supervised collection making it highly immune to tampering. On the contrary, for drug usage screenings in the preceding five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a timeline of drug use by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drug presence. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG assessments, add-ons, and/or panels beyond 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is missing, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Specifically, head hair pertains to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential phases in the lab processing of a drug test response are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the first-handling of a specimen within a lab's framework. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid analysis for substances of misuse. Although Screening is economical for ruling out drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive result must be validated to be acceptable in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves retrieving drugs from hair with a much lower concentration than seen in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most intricate method to conduct.

Verification of any positive Screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation standards of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug evaluations can reveal substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite challenging, resulting in more accurate findings.
  • Offers historical insight: It can demonstrate usage patterns over time, not solely current consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the surface.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing significantly outperforms traditional urine tests in Spring Lake, IN. Offering superior detection accuracy, hair testing provides a more comprehensive insight into an individual's drug history. While urine tests primarily capture recent substance use, hair tests capture data over a longer timeframe, offering a holistic view of one's substance use. This makes hair testing a more reliable method.

Extended Detection Window

With the benefit of identifying substance use over an extended duration, hair follicle testing in Spring Lake, IN, offers coverage of up to 90 days. This prolonged detection window provides employers with an extensive understanding of an employee or applicant's drug history. By mapping out their substance usage, hair testing presents a detailed snapshot, enhancing the screening process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
