Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in St. Bernice, Indiana. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you're after, turn to Accredited Drug Testing for specialized hair testing. We have facilities across the nation ready to conduct a hair test. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown is required, or body hair may be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common approach in drug testing. Employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse professionals often choose hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred by organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies and legal bodies overseeing probationary cases. A key advantage is the extended detection window, up to 90 days, combined with a supervised collection process, minimizing the potential for cheating. Nevertheless, for recent drug usage detection within the past 5 days, urine tests retain their accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-lasting record of drug and alcohol markers by embedding them in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection window for alcohol and other substances. It is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly matching the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests beyond 10 panels, EtG, or additional analyses, 150mg of the sample is preferable. We advise using a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core steps in processing a drug test result in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory step of incorporating a sample into the lab's system. This phase includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any outstanding data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical means to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be accepted in legal settings. Samples testing positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample tests positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at much lower levels than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the challenges of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed to be positive are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage up to 90 days compared to urine tests which have a shorter range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides usage history: It can offer a historical pattern of drug usage over a timeline, not exclusively recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Lacks recent usage detection: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to be pricier than other drug-testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
