Accredited Drug Testing provides fully comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Stroh, Indiana. Need a test for drugs or alcohol? Our expertise lies in hair testing, and we've testing facilities across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct this type of test. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or, in some instances, from your body. These tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Hair follicle drug testing has seen increased adoption for drug screening in recent years, particularly by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals who prefer it over the conventional urine test. Employers looking for zero-tolerance on drug use, judicial systems, and individuals on probation favor hair follicle tests. Their primary advantage is the extended detection span of up to 90 days, collected via an observed method and being highly cheat-resistant. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This stage includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for admissibility in legal settings. Any samples with presumptive positive results during Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. In this process, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening presents the most complex methodology.

All positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is critically assessed under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Protracted detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasted with urine tests that offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is exceedingly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical data provision: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing vs. urine testing in Stroh, IN, the former emerges as superior due to its enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
