Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug and alcohol testing services in Topeka, Indiana. Our nationwide centers are equipped to conduct specialized hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required for analysis. Hair testing options include detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom criteria.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity over traditional methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair tests for their extended detection window and near-impossibility of tampering. With a detection period of up to 90 days and supervised sample collection, hair tests offer a robust option compared to the 5-day accuracy of urine tests.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug intake by locking biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can present close to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly akin to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair might be obtained. Mentioning head hair specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair indicates all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Outline

The four major steps in the lab handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system. This comprises ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes an initial cursory check for substance abuse. Although Screening effectively rules out drug usage on most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples that yield presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is amongst the most complex methods to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation where required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is notably hard to falsify a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers temporal data: It can offer a trend of drug use over time, instead of merely recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: It typically requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Outcome variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Though sometimes described as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Wins Over Urine Tests: In Topeka, IN, hair follicle testing provides significant advantages in drug detection reliability. Unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period, hair tests offer a more extensive detection window, making them superior for assessing long-term substance use. Employers benefit from the enhanced accuracy provided by hair testing for maintaining a drug-free workplace.

With its comprehensive analysis, hair testing can screen for multiple substances effectively, showcasing its advanced capability compared to traditional urine sampling.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Windows make hair follicle testing in Topeka, IN, the ultimate choice for a thorough review of substance history. Unlike urine tests, which cover only recent use, hair tests offer insights into up to 90 days of drug use, providing a fuller picture of an individual's substance history for employers seeking comprehensive screenings.

Employers receive crucial information to assess long-term risks and patterns in substance use, aiding in more informed decision-making.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests in Topeka, IN, assures reliable results, minimizing the risk of sample adulteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
