Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Vera Cruz, Indiana. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our specialty lies in hair testing, with available centers in cities nationwide to conduct such tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is usable. Tests analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Lately, conducting drug testing has increasingly incorporated the hair follicle method. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists often prefer this test over standard urine tests. Hair follicle testing benefits zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers with a 90-day drug detection period, observed collection, and reduced cheating risk. Yet, for drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Testing hair has emerged as an influential instrument for discovering drug and alcohol usage. Hair serves as a long-term record for alcohol and other substances by trapping biomarkers within the strands as the hair grows. When collected near the scalp, hair is effective for up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, rather challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, any additional assessments, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, it is suggested to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. Referring to head hair implies only scalp hair, whereas body hair denotes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four crucial stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial stage of incorporating a sample into a lab’s system. This stage includes confirming if the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entries not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary quick examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is economical for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

In the event a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. This is where drugs are sourced from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other approaches (e.g., urine or saliva), which explains the complexity of hair drug screening.

The Confirmation stage for any positive result from the screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historic data: Hair tests unveil a drug utilization pattern spanning a period, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment targets the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
