Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Waveland, Indiana. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing has centers in cities across the Nation for carrying out these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is required. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a common method in drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals increasingly favor hair tests over standard urine tests. This method suits organizations with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and individuals on probation. It offers up to 90-day detection windows, is collected under supervision, and is difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain more accurate for drug use detection within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers in the strands as they grow, creating a prolonged history of substance use. Collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch section of around 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from close to the scalp yields 100mg, the perfect quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount from the body may be gathered. Specifically, “head hair” refers solely to scalp hair, while “body hair” encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory procedure encompasses four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is integrated into the laboratory’s system, involving the verification of proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entries not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although it is a cost-efficient approach that can rule out drug presence in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening require further verification.

In instances where a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are drawn out from hair at concentrations significantly lower than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation when necessary. Every phase from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days in retrospect, compared to urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is highly challenging to fake a hair drug test, thus ensuring accurate results.
  • Illustrates historical use: It can depict a pattern of drug use over the past, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot ascertain recent use: Detection of drugs in hair occurs approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Typically called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
