Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Wheatfield, Indiana. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing is available across the nation. You usually need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body for most tests. Hair samples can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific testing options.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has gained popularity in recent years, often preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies and individuals under probation find hair testing advantageous for its extended detection period, capable of revealing drug use up to 90 days and collected in direct observation, making it extremely difficult to deceive. However, for detection of recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair preserves a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand fibers as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will supply 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels over 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's best to weigh the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, it pertains to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair implies all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in the lab procedure for processing a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the basic processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for illicit drugs. While being an economical method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation to be legally valid. Samples marked as presumptively positive in Screening indeed require further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a sample as presumptively positive, more hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation when required. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a span of 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage history: It offers a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
