Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Whitehall, Indiana. If you require a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our specialty lies in hair testing. We operate testing centers nationwide, including every city, to facilitate hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is necessary. Hair tests analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle evaluations. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer a hair drug test over the traditional urine method. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationees utilize hair follicle testing. A key advantage is the extended detection period, generally up to 90 days. The process is observed and nearly foolproof. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a potent method for recognizing drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical account of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can yield a detection period of up to around three months for substances such as alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimum amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes a drug test result through these four chief steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the sample's initial incorporation into a lab's system. This involves confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data input that hasn't been captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a rapid primary evaluation for drug abuse. Though Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result must undergo confirmation to be permissible in legal proceedings. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair from the initial specimen is utilized for Extraction. This phase involves retrieving drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification, and it holds accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, hence results are more dependable.
  • Offers usage history: This can outline a pattern of drug consumption over a span of time, beyond just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite levels within the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," this test actually analyzes the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
