In Williams, Indiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle screenings. If a hair drug or alcohol evaluation is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with testing locations available nationwide, capable of executing such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be utilized. These assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent approach for substance screening. Many employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists are opting for hair tests over the conventional urine analysis. Hair follicle evaluations are favored by organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and those supervising probationary individuals. This method is preferred due to its longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, observed collection process, and difficulty to falsify. Despite this, for detecting recent drug use within a five-day period, urine tests remain unparalleled in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a prolonged history of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers in the hair strand fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair offers approximately a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is an ideal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional analyses, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is suggested. It's advised to use a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample weight. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test consists of four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where the sample is processed into a laboratory’s system. This step includes verifying sample sealing and shipping, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary, quick test for substance abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective means to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screen needs confirming to be legally admissible. Presumably positive samples during Screening require further confirmation.

For presumptive positives in Screening, additional hair is utilized for Extraction. In this step, drug compounds are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Confirming positive screening outcomes is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is analyzed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use over a 90-day span, unlike urine tests with a brief detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a drug usage pattern over time instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual hair growth differences might influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
