Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Williams Creek, Indiana. Whether it's for drug or alcohol detection, we specialize in hair analysis, with centers across all cities nationwide ready to assist you. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically needed from the crown or body. Our tests cater to drugs, alcohol, ETG, or various personalized options.

Recently, drug testing procedures have increasingly adopted hair follicle testing. Many corporations, judicial systems, and professionals addressing substance abuse are opting for hair tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with no-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary individuals commonly use hair follicle testing. A notable advantage is the lengthy detection span of up to 90 days, observed collection integrity, and its resistance to fraudulent manipulation. However, for recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests maintain greater accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and various drugs by embedding biomarkers into the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for testing and corroboration. For EtG, extra analyses, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is recommended to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result chiefly involves four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning stage includes the initial handling of a sample into a lab's database. This step checks that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs. Though Screening is an economical approach for ruling out drug use in most samples, any positive result necessitates confirmation to hold in court. Samples that are provisionally positive in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

In instances where a sample is provisionally positive during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair-based drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed as needed prior to confirmation. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's quite challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can provide a timeline of drug use over months, as opposed to just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not indicative of recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
