Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Wolflake, Indiana. If you're seeking a hair or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with centers across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct these tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is generally required, either from the scalp or body. Hair testing can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence in the realm of drug screening. An increasing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists advocate for hair tests over the traditional urine analysis. Hair tests are favored by organizations with strict anti-drug policies, judicial bodies, and those overseeing individuals on probation. The significant advantage of hair testing is the extended detection window for substances, typically up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process that is nearly impossible to tamper with. For drug use within the past 5 days, however, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged trace of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair may offer an approximately 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. The collection process for hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch snippet of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample amount for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advocate utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. The term head hair specifically denotes scalp hair. In contrast, body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails initially processing a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This phase verifies that the sample was adequately sealed and shipped and entails assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) along with finalizing any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for abusive drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient technique to eliminate drug usage for most samples, any positive screening requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is withdrawn from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to hair drug testing being the most intricate methodology to conduct.

Any positive results from screening undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug analysis can uncover drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a narrower detection range.
  • Minimal tampering likelihood: The difficulty of deceiving a hair drug test renders the results more reliable.
  • Historical tracking capability: It offers a timeline of drug consumption trends rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
